CARR Machine & Tool Endorses NIMS CNC Credential

With the revival of manufacturing in full swing, companies are finding themselves in a predicament: few job seekers have the skills that manufacturers need. Technology on the shop floor is evolving quickly and companies are striving to get their employees the credentials to operate complex machines. As a result, manufacturing companies are taking an active role in their employees’ training and development by encouraging them to pursue certifications and credentials within their trade.

TMA’s Education Department has been working diligently, over the last year, on the revival of the Apprenticeship Training program at TMA. TMA members now have the opportunity to have their employees test for various National Institute for Metal Working Skills (NIMS) certifications. NIMS, the nation’s only American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited developer of precision manufacturing skills standards, that certifies individual skills against standards and accredits programs that meet its quality requirements.

TMA member, CARR Machine & Tool, Inc. in Elk Grove Village has capitalized on this by encouraging their employees to pursue apprenticeship training and certifications through TMA’s Education Department. Kevin Rupar, a CNC Machinist at CARR Machine & Tool, Inc., received his National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) and was certified by the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) in 2011. He then decided to pursue his NIMS CNC Mill Setup and Operations credentials shortly thereafter. The NIMS credential in CNC Mill Set-up and Operations certifies Kevin to operate a FANUC or HAAS-based CNC machine.

Jim Carr, President of CARR Machine & Tool, Inc., noted on Kevin’s hard work, “Kevin had the mechanical aptitude for our industry and showed promise. With this course opportunity he could easily work at home, taking his courses online at his own pace while getting hands-on education during work hours.” It also means a lot to Kevin that his employer acknowledges his achievements. Kevin explained, “They [CARR] believe I have the skills and knowledge it takes for these certificates, which gives me the confidence to pursue them. It shows that they are willing to invest in me to make me a better person.”

Jim stated, “We are taking a proactive approach to getting our employees credentialed. In addition, it promotes our ISO 9001:2008 policy of continuous improvement, as well as benefiting our employees with validation of their position and opens opportunities to move up in rank.”

TMA offers classes throughout the year and will also expand class offerings in 2013. To learn more contact the Education Department at 847-825-1120.
